Routine Checks Q & A

What happens during a routine checkup?

Well-woman exams are routine checkups tailored to your specific needs, overall health, and any symptoms you’re currently experiencing. Your routine checkup can include:

  • Head-to-toe physical exam
  • A pelvic exam or Pap smear
  • Evaluation of body mass index (BMI)
  • Updates on vaccinations
  • Birth control counseling or updates on prescriptions

In some cases, you may also need lab work, including a blood draw or urinalysis, too.

Do I need a Pap smear during my well-woman exam?

Possibly. A Pap smear is the leading way to detect cervical cancer and abnormal cervical cells. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommend having a Pap smear by age 21, or as soon as you become sexually active. It’s important to have a Pap test annually during your 20s.

After age 30, you only need a Pap smear every three years, as long as you have a consistent history of negative Pap tests. If you’ve ever had an abnormal Pap though, Dr. Patel may still recommend annual testing. Generally, you need regular Pap tests as recommended until you have a full hysterectomy — that wasn’t due to abnormal cervical cells or cancer — or until you reach age 70.

How often do I need a routine doctor’s exam?

In most cases, Dr. Patel wants to see you annually for a routine well-woman exam. If you have a chronic health issue, pelvic pain, or are trying to become pregnant, you may need more frequent visits.

It’s common for women to think they can skip their routine check if they’re generally healthy and don’t have any current issues. But the truth is, serious health issues, including cervical cancer and heart disease — conditions that regularly affect women — develop gradually over time.

The best way to prevent chronic disease is early detection and intervention. Dr. Patel can even work closely with your primary care physician to ensure you’re getting the comprehensive health care you need.
